
HLI was engaged to carry out the replacement operation of two industrial fan types, WP2 and WP7, at a waste incineration plant in Dublin. The team’s task was to develop the replacement methodology and to design and operate dedicated horizontal and vertical transport systems, enabling the safe movement of the equipment within the existing facility.
Scope of Work
- 2 WP2 fans weighing approximately 10 tonnes each,
- 2 WP7 fans weighing approximately 45 tonnes each,
- Development of the fan dismantling and installation methodology,
- Design of dedicated support and transport structures,
- Structural strength analyses of the structures used,
- Planning of horizontal and vertical transport,
- Supply, installation and operation of specialised transport systems,
- Technical supervision over the execution of the operation.

WP2 Fan Replacement Sequence

Step 1
Disconnecting the fan from the installation, partial dismantling of the ducts, and preparation of the structure for vertical transport.

Step 2
Lifting the fan, dismantling the vibration isolation elements, and installing transport rollers.

Step 3
Moving the fan out of its operating position using transport rollers and hoists.

Step 4
Horizontal transport of the fan towards the transport opening using rollers and hoists.

Step 5
Connecting the fan to the vertical transport system and moving it above the transport opening.

Step 6
Positioning the fan directly above the transport opening.

Step 7
Lowering the fan to the lower level and placing it on transport rollers and a mover.

Step 8
Horizontal transport of the fan along the designated route to the outside of the building.
WP7 Fan Replacement Sequence

Step 1
Preparation of the work area by dismantling the interfering stairs, disconnecting the fan from the installation, and partially dismantling the ducts.

Step 2
Lifting the fan using hydraulic cylinders, dismantling the vibration isolation elements, and installing transport rollers.

Step 3
Positioning and securing the dedicated transport frame.

Step 4
Moving the fan onto the transport frame using hoists, followed by stabilising and securing it for transport.

Step 5
Lifting the frame together with the fan and installing transport rollers and a mover to enable further movement.

Step 6
Rotating the assembly by 90° and transporting it along the designated route to the outside of the building.
